Isn’t the Army crazy?! Aren’t hippies silly?! Imagine if their ideals came together. Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare at Goats tries to do just that – and succeeds to a certain extent – with a tale about the U.S. military investigating the use of psychic powers as weapons against the enemy.
However, taking the true stories from Jon Ronson’s book of the same name and adding a fictionalized b-story involving Ewan McGregor’s oddly accented journalist and George Clooney’s ‘Jedi warrior’ of the New Earth Army, Lyn Cassady, the film ends up being patchy at best. It becomes practically ridiculous when Kevin Spacey enters the arena as ‘Jedi for the dark side’, Larry Hooper.
Whilst everyone gives it their all, unfortunately the film has no real bite and fails to look any deeper into some of worst atrocities of warfare.
